The One Minutes Jr. brings together youngsters all over the world for video workshops to make their voices heard. Nearly 4,000 youngsters from 100 countries have taken part in the programme since its inception in 2002. Fifteen one-minute films made by youngsters from Eritrea, Japan, Lebanon, Myanmar, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Palestine, South Korea, Syria and Turkey are nominated for The One Minutes Jr. Awards 2020.

In the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic, we are delighted to share with you two outstanding One Minutes Jr* videos produced in 2019. These works are selected among many excellent productions from around the world and honored with the 2020 Rain Barrel Communications Special Recognition Award. Enjoy!

Rain Barrel Director Robert Cohen’s speech to recognize two winners of the Rain Barrel Communications Special Recognition Award:

I am delighted and honored to present the Rain Barrel Communications Special Recognition Award this year – online, this time, due to the pandemic that is affecting us all. I’m making this video in NYC, one of the hotspots, feeling connected to all of you. We need to come together as a global community to end the pandemic. May all of us be safe and healthy.

This awards ceremony is one way we can continue our lives and keep up our spirits.⠀

We didn’t feel comfortable honoring just one, so we chose two remarkable One Minutes Jr:⠀

⠀
Light and Life by Pyae Phyo Kyaw , 2019, Myanmar

It powerfully conveys the uncertainties of life and the importance of education to survive and thrive. In 60 seconds, you sense the teenage filmmaker’s philosophy and culture as well as his message. ⠀

This film was part of a series created by kids who are in and out of school in Myanmar, sponsored by The One Minutes Foundation, with support from UNICEF and The Korea International Cooperation Agency, in collaboration with Ministry of Education, Myanmar  and State Education Departments. ⠀

Congratulations, Pyae Phyo Kyaw!⠀

Home Again by Hala & Zainab, The Netherlands 2019

Our second award goes to Home Again, which was created by Hala & Zainab, young women now living in Netherlands. It shows beauty buried in the sand and the two girls working together. Memories of home and nature are symbolized by flowers. They speak of their long journeys from Syria. Lovely, simple, touching, it spotlights one of the crucial issues of our times, with a positive message of resilience. ⠀

It is wonderful that the One Minutes Foundation is holding film workshops in centers for refugees in a country like the Netherlands that welcomes them – not like my own country, whose president is trying to slam the door.⠀

Warmest congratulations, Hala & Zainab!⠀

A shout-out to all the awesome filmmakers! And thank you to our friends at The One Minutes Foundation! ⠀
